What counts as an active principal
Section titled “What counts as an active principal”A principal is whoever you check or grant permissions for: a user, a service or an agent, identified by your own ID. A principal is active in a billing period if, during that period, it was:
- the subject of a
Check,BatchCheckorListAccesscall; - granted permissions or roles on a resource; or
- added to a group.
Each distinct principal counts once per billing period, however many calls it appears in. A principal that does nothing in a period isn’t counted for that period.
- Groups count their members. Checking or granting
group:editorscounts every current member of the group. The group’s owngroup:ID isn’t counted. - Removing access doesn’t lower the count. Revoking a grant or removing someone from a group doesn’t un-count them for the current period.
- Not counted: the explain call behind the dashboard’s Access tester, and reading permissions, roles, groups or grants.
- Counts are per organisation, across all of its projects.
Billing periods
Section titled “Billing periods”The count starts again at the start of each billing period. On a paid plan the period follows your subscription’s billing date. On Free it runs monthly from when your organisation was created.
The Free plan’s hard limit
Section titled “The Free plan’s hard limit”Free has no overage. Once 1,000 principals are active in the current billing period:
- New principals can’t be added. Granting to, or adding to a group, a principal that has no grants and no
group memberships anywhere in your organisation fails with
PERMISSION_DENIED(“organisation is not permitted to grant permissions”). - Existing principals keep working. Principals that already have grants or group memberships can still be granted to and added to groups.
- Checks are never blocked.
Check,BatchCheckandListAccesskeep answering, so the active count can go slightly over 1,000 in a period. - The limit resets at the start of the next billing period, or as soon as you move to a paid plan.
Starter and Growth have no hard limit: principals above the included amount are billed per active principal.
Other limits
Section titled “Other limits”Each plan also limits the number of projects and dashboard team members (see the table above), how long the audit log is kept and the request rate. See the pricing page for those figures.
